Jennifer Mickel

Hi, I’m Jenn!! I’m an AI researcher working to ensure the integration of AI into society benefits all people. My work focuses on AI evaluation, societal impact of AI systems, and methods for improving the development, deployment, governance, monitoring, and understanding of AI systems.

I am currently a PhD student at UC Berkeley where I am a part of BAIR (Berkeley AI Research Lab) and advised by Irene Chen and Emma Pierson. My work is supported by the NSF CSGrad4US FEllowship. I currently am a Strategy and Community Engagement Chair and Research Lead at the Evaluating Evaluations Coalition. Prior to starting my PhD, I was a software engineer building evaluations on the Agent Observability team at Datadog and a researcher with EleutherAI.

I finished my undergrad at UT Austin where I was a Dean’s Honored Graduate and studied Computer Science and Mathematics in the Turing Scholars and Polymathic Scholars honors programs and minored in African and African Diaspora Studies, Sociology, and Women and Gender Studies. I was advised by Dr. Maria De-Arteaga and Dr. Kevin Tian.

My work has been published at NeurIPS, ICML, and FAccT and has been covered by the Washington Post and MIT Technology Review.
